Suning Appliance Co, China's largest home appliances retailer, will start selling general merchandise in four flagship stores in late Sept, in a move to diversify its business.
Suning officials told the Beijing Times that 20 general merchandise stores will open this year and that there will be 400 such stores in China by 2015.
The new stores will stock more than 1,000 global brands. The company said the new business model will become its main operational model in the future.
Zhang Jindong, chairman of Suning, said that, at the beginning of the year, the company planned to not only boost its position in the home appliances sector but also to expand into the non-home appliances market.
The logo of the new stores will not include the word "appliances" in Chinese, which will help the company to distinguish itself from a pure home appliances retailer.
Hou Enlong, general manager of Suning Beijing Co, said that the company is starting to expand its products range and will engage in multi-format operations.
The company’s four flagship stores are in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing and Guangzhou. The first new store in Shanghai will be in the Changning district.
